The Western Circuit Mooting Competition is the internal competition at Exeter. It is open to students from all years and of any standard. Prior to the start of the competition we hold workshops for those who have never mooted before. The first round takes places during the Michaelmas term. Experienced student mooters act as the judges providing a friendly and informal introduction to mooting for those who are new to mooting. The question is usually one of contract. The second round follows early in the Lent term and is generally judged by a recent Exeter graduate who was involved in mooting. The content of the second round moot is criminal. The quarterfinal moots are judged by lecturers in the final term, followed by the semis which are judged by practitioners. The Grand Final is the culmination of the mooting year and takes place in Exeter Guildhall. A panel of three judges watch four of Exeter’s best mooters taking part. Traditionally the moot problem is kindly drafted by Professor Tettenborn.
The Ashfords Mooting Competition, established in 2006 by Jennifer Cassidy and Jenny Betterton, is a beginner mooting competition between students from the Universities of Exeter and Plymouth. Held in the first term it aims to familiarise students with mooting and provide an extra opportunity to moot for those who do not have much mooting experience. The mooters are judged by experienced student mooters from the two universities, which helps to keep the day informal and enjoyable. The 2007 Ashfords Mooting Competition took place on Saturday 10th November.
The ESU-Essex Court National Mooting Competition is run by the English Speaking Union and sponsored by Essex Court Chambers. Universities from across the country enter the competition and it is organised through a series of knockout rounds over the course of the year. Exeter once again entered a team, Katherine Afford and Victoria Carpenter. The first round took place on the 10th December against Southampton.
The Weekly Law Reports Annual Mooting Competition organised by the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting is another of the national moots. Our team from Exeter, Jenni Cassidy and Jenny Betterton are through to the quarter finals of the WLR mooting competition this year. The next round will be taking at the end of January.

The West of England Mooting Competition is a new inter-varsity moot run by the University of the West of England with the support of St John’s Chambers and the Bristol Institute of Legal Practice. The competition is sponsored by LexisNexis. The first round of moots took place during the first few weeks of January. The team from Exeter was Kat Afford and Frances Young.
The European Law Moot Court competition is a bilingual French and English mooting competition on issues of European Law. The first round is completed by entering written pleadings and only once teams are through to the second round do they have to consider the oral pleadings. The oral pleadings take place in four regional rounds. This year the regional rounds are taking place in Texas, Wales, Spain and Slovenia. The team of four students from Exeter, Aloïs Charpenet, Laura Evans, Julia Horbach and Victoria Keenan are through to the regional round in Valencia, Spain. They have received a large amount of support from Dr Amandine Garde.
The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is an international competition entered by second and third year students from Exeter who are studying Public International Law. There is no need to have experience in mooting to take part, but you must be studying PIL. The competition involves a written memorial and the oral pleadings. The team will come up against a number of postgraduate teams in the national rounds. Despite the amount of work involved it is well worth getting involved if you have the opportunity. The first few national rounds take place in London over a weekend during February. The 2008 team is Zoe Evans, Gary McLachlan, Sarah Crack and Kelly Rossiter.
The D.M. Harish Memorial International Moot Court Competition is run by the Government Law College in Mumbai. Exeter has entered a team each year since it became an international competition in 2005. The competition is open to experienced mooters (usually third years) who have some knowledge of international law. The compromis usually focuses on topical issues of Public International Law, such as expropriation of genetic materials, human rights and free movement, as well as aspects of international law such as the Law of Treaties and Jurisdiction. This year the compromis is focused around Human Rights issues and free movement in an economic union. The competition takes place over three days in India and provides the opportunity to observe a range of mooting styles, as well as meeting people from countries across the world. Jenny Betterton and Jenni Cassidy will be mooting this year, accompanied by Jeni Bird as the researcher.
